Mourning Fields is a collection of Greek myths retold as dark fictions in the modern day.

When we romanticize unrequited love, what lessons do we teach? The Mourning Fields puts Greek myths into modern contexts, asking what the stories look like today and what consequences might follow. Perfect for readers who love weird tales of catharsis like those written by Sharma Shields or Carmen Maria Machado.

David Beaumier is the youngest recipient of the Village Books Literary Citizenship Award. They have worked in the publishing industry and been a member of the Bellingham writing community for the last twelve years, including as the Assistant Publishing Director at Village Books. They currently help market indie authors and small presses with Chanticleer Book Reviews. When not writing, David teaches Argentine tango locally.

Oh, and if you’re in the vicinity of Bellingham, WA this Friday, there is a book release event at our local indie bookseller, Village Books in Fairhaven. Here is a link for the details. I do recommend registering if you attend: https://villagebooks.com/events/3421220250926

“Rich in its contemporary setting, mythic parallel, and characters walking between the two, The Mourning Fields by David Beaumier stirs empathy and delivers catharsis.”

Chanticleer Book Reviews

“The Mourning Fields is real and raw and achingly relevant. A stunning debut and a gift to all willing to see they have a bit of dirt on their shoes.”

HamLit Literary Journal

“The stories in The Mourning Fields reimagine Greek myths to address love, obsession, lust, and harm. What’s most mesmerizing about this book is its steadfast, moving undercurrent of kindness, something this world desperately needs.”

Sharma Shields

When we romanticize unrequited love, what lessons do we teach?

In these tragic retellings, David Beaumier unravels the meaning of Greek myths in a contemporary setting. Zeus slowly turns to plastic as he breaks faith with Hera, Echo stalks Narcissus from a nearby balcony, and Dionysus runs a college frat house. Fresh and intimate, The Mourning Fields delves into the obsession, hope, and rage of humanity in the face of trauma, survival, and desire.
